Symmetry: primary
The children make designs with mirror symmetry using their kaleidoscopes, and make corresponding ‘Polish’ cutouts from paper disks.
With a rotagram made from the base and tracing paper, they then draw designs with rotation symmetry, and make corresponding cutouts from overlapping disks.
Finally they make designs with tiles, examining which kinds of symmetry are compatible.
Symmetry – the Cube: secondary
We build and manipulate models to show how operations with familiar symmetry elements can be combined, and investigate the equivalence relations which result: an informal introduction to symmetry groups in particular and the group concept in general.
